You can’t beat a game that takes a cute, childish concept like playing with toy soldiers and wraps it around a deliberately over-serious strategic shooter for the mobile.
It’s got all the elements that any tech-savvy overgrown kid would love, and delivers on that wonderfully juvenile concept within minutes of going to playroom war.
Taking command of a small regiment of green toy soldiers, it’s your patriotic duty to fight your way through a host of household maps and take out the khaki coloured toy soldiers.
It’s a boyhood battle from beginning to end, played out with a deliciously serious face.
Deciding which toys to take into battle is your first task.
At least one rifleman is always a good idea, but you’ll also need to decide between the likes of grenadiers, bazooka guys, mine sweepers and other well-equipped playthings to make it through the kitchen top warzone alive.
Each type of soldier has his own speciality, and not every map presents the same challenge.
Fighting down the hallway requires the use of a mine sweeper so you’re plastic platoon isn’t taken out at the first bottleneck, while the bathroom battle demands grenadiers to take out the enemy toys from behind their toilet roll barricades.
To say it’s based entirely on toy soldiers, Army Men: Mobile Ops still demands a lot of strategic decisions on your part.
The fighting mechanics are simple, with the soldiers taking automatic aim once they’re in range, but charging in boots first is never a successful tactic.
Admittedly the enemies could use a little more intelligence, but the wide diversity of environments and enemy types ensures that even the most hardened shooter fanatic will delight in taking out his toy box once again and going to war on the playroom floor.
